Online Diary: Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare

cod4 I’ve been playing a lot of COD4 this week and it really is an outstanding game.

Offline, I’m about halfway through the campaign on Hardened. I had heard the campaign was a little short so decided to up the difficulty to give me a challenge and stretch the game out a little. I almost went with Veteran but online reports lead me to believe sections can get very frustrating and hard at Veteran level.. I’ll save that setting for my replay for Achievements.

Online, I’m having a blast.. really has that “just one more game” aspect to it, keeping me up till 2/3am trying to rank up again and unlock some of the goodies you can only get access to by climbing up the ranks.

The guns are well balanced in that, the starter assault rifle is just as effective as the assault rifle you unlock at level 55, giving new players and experienced ones somewhat of a level playing field in that respect. Maps have dynamic respawn points, moving you around the map as areas are overrun with enemy players.. really helps stop base rapers. All the guns have extra features such as new camo’s, silencers, increased range scopes.. all unlocked as you rank up through online play.

All the above come into play in the ‘create-a-class’ feature unlocked at level 4. This option allows you to pick a weapon, attachment (grenade launcher, silencer, scope), camo, and a selection of ‘perks’ to fill 3 available slots.

These perks are the meat of the custom class creation. Your character has 3 available slots for perks which are passive abilities that boost your combat in various different ways. For example, if you equip a grenade launcher to your gun, the first perk slot will be taken up with grenade ammo. You could instead choose to take an RPG, claymores, C4, or extra ’special’ grenades (flashbang/smoke/stun grenades).

Perks 2 and 3 are a little different. Perk 1 is usually ammo of some type as you can see, Perks 2 and 3 contain combat boosts such as, increased bullet damage and/or penetration (allowing certain guns to shoot through walls if thin enough), a sprint boost allowing you to run for longer, steady aim for when you have to fire from the hip, last stand allowing you to pull a pistol out in your dying breath and even the score with whoever took you out before you ‘bleed out’. I wont list them all but you get the general idea.. using combinations of these perks, weapons and attachments its possible to alter your playstyle greatly to suit your needs. For example, I have a silenced MP5, extra stun grenades, UAV Jammer, Extreme Conditioning as my primary loadout.

The thinking behind this is, with a silencer you do not show up on the map when you fire as you do with non-silenced weapons, the UAV Jammer stops the radar picking me up when the enemy team calls it in, Extreme Conditioning is the ’sprint for longer’ distances perk which allows me to quickly move around the map. The stun grenades are for immobilising the enemy quickly in a pinch.

Using this loadout I can get around the map fast, flushing out snipers and campers to great effect. UAV Jammer makes me invisible to all, giving me the drop on people who expect to see a red dot on the minimap when an enemy approaches The silenced gun means that when I do find some snipers holed up, its possible (as long as no-one see’s me enter the room) to sneak up on them, shoot the first guy without showing up on the minimap (which seems to fool people to think there buddy was sniped from somewhere else) then I’m free to either gun down whoever is left, drop a nade and back out firing, or my fave lately, take out the trusty knife and shank that sniper :)

When I started using this technique I managed to come up behind 4 people on Vacant and shank the lot of them, one after the other before someone realised and threw a grenade at my feet….

The other reason behind this loadout is the knife. Sometimes its more reliable to sprint up on an enemy and slice em’ up so the Extreme Conditioning perk really lets you get up close and personal fast.. most people still back away firing from the hip (reduced accuracy) when you surprise them so I’m all too happy to hit sprint and slam a knife into my opponent :) Fast and satisfying!

Attunement Progress

KaraFinally completed my Kara attunement last night with a day of the deadline left so that’s a relief. Was starting to think I wouldn’t get it done in time. Took a while to get a group up (why so little people going in CoT:Dark Portal?) but eventually, with the help of two guildie’s and two randoms (mage/tank) we got going.

Little sketchy at first, I got overconfident on one of my trash-runs and pulled too many mobs in the clearing stage which resulted in a wipe for me. Got enough AoE off for the group to clear up and rez me though so no biggie.

Starting the event was a worry for me. Last time we tried this I was on add detail and in the second phase (after the first boss) an add slipped past me unnoticed. As I was burning the next mob down I realised the shield was dropping and fell back to Medivh to pick the add up, during this time another (mob) had popped and I was out of range of the healer, so once I’d blown my cool-downs and gathered the adds, I was a sitting duck and fell soon after. Released as fast as poss and ran back but the adds were too many, 2 portals were then open and I couldn’t get back on top of the adds. When the shield hit 47% we gave up and called it.

Determined not to mess up this time, I said I’d pick adds up again. Filled my bag with water, buffed the group, made all my mana gems and readied myself.

No idea how the run went for the other 4 guys but come the last boss that shield was at 100% and not one single add had got anywhere near Medivh so I was happy with a job well done. Its a micro-managing feat playing a mage in BM at times. Popping the pet every 3 min’s, trinkets every time the cool-downs up, Racial berserker bonus, timing mana gem/evocations.. so much to do and so little time to get anything wrong.

One thing I noticed and was pretty happy about.. my DPS wasn’t that far off the fire mage, and in some areas (pre-event trash clear) was higher. Given that he was focus firing the elite the tank was holding and I was swapping targets every 30 secs and didn’t cast a single spell on any of the elites/bosses till the last one, I don’t think that’s bad for a frosty. To be fair, he /tell’ed me asking if I needed the shoulders from the second boss (still no idea what shoulders they are), which I didn’t as I already have my Shadoweave set, so I assume I was better geared which would account for the DPS.

All in all a great run with minimal fuss and the added benefit of getting two more of us attuned taking the total up to 12 now I believe.

Kara update

KaraBrief update.. Attunement Deadline is today and I still need Black Morass for my key.

Blasted through Arca for the last key fragment I needed, didn’t do a full run just punched a hole through to the Guardian, quick kill/loot then back down for a tank-less take-down of the first boss.

From there we piled into the first CoT instance, Escape From Durnholde where we continued to punch holes in anything in front of us.. great run, all clear in what I thought was a quick time. Problem came as everyone zoned out of the instance and our guild-leader/main healer asks in chat if I had spoken to Taretha in the inn and I got that sinking feeling.

In my defense, and yes, it is a weak one I realise… I was busy drinking after the encounter at the top of the inn and by the time I realised I could speak to Taretha, someone started the event. No problem I thought, usually when we do stuff like this it auto updates your log same as when we escort and someone else initiates the encounter. Not for me… :(

Back in we go, smooth run again.. Taretha encounter all worked, quest updated/completed and BM unlocked.

That’s when it started to go pear shaped. Lag was DC’ing our hunter every 2 minutes so the first 8 waves or so we 4 manned with some difficulty but not too bad.

On Temporus (not sure of the name at the mo) our Tank DC’ed twice dropping aggro right on my frail frosty lil’ mage, wiping the group twice. By that point a ton of extra portals were open, shield at 47% and dropping.. a reset was discussed but it was getting late and the Hunter and Tank needed to go so we called it. Shame too as we were steamrolling everything up to that point.

Still, great night.. comms helped a lot and restored some of the fun back to the game for me. hearing the trademark banter from the guild was great fun :)

Marky Mark.. Why? Really.. Why?

Max Payne MovieMy hatred for this next piece of info is so intense its off the map.

Mark Wahlberg to play Max Payne

That’s right, good ol’ Marky Mark (presumably lacking ‘the funky bunch’) has been cast as Max Payne for the upcoming movie of the same name.

Wahlberg might be able to pull it off, some might even say he’s a good actor who has starred in some OK movies.

Not me! My dislike for the guy is so intense and irrational I couldn’t even say how it started but I know I dislike him immensely and I’m a man of principle.. Sorry Marky but you can take your slow mo bullet action and ram it right where the funky bunch came from.

If the Max Payne character model even remotely looks like Marky Mark in the next game then out of principle, I wont even consider parting with as little as a single pubic hair for it..

Penny Arcade on Manhunt 2

Penny ArcadeI know, I know.. I said I was sick of the Manhunt stampede, but this is different

Penny Arcade on Manhunt 2

At last, someone calls it as it is…

Manhunt 2 Madness

Manhunt 2 I know its a hot topic right now but personally I’m tired of seeing people blow up in one extreme or the other regarding this game. Its got to the point where I’m a few Manhunt posts away from perma-removing GamePolitics.com from my RSS feeds. Not that I’m not a GP fan because I am. I just cant read one more Manhunt post this month..

It seems every site is posting this group or that groups thoughts, this industry analyst, that watchdog, this critic… on and on and on, opinions from people I never heard of and quite frankly don’t care about.

I never liked the original Manhunt. Not because of the hyper-violence but because of its repetitive game-play. I tired of the stylised death cut-scenes after the 3rd or 4th time I’d seen each one. For me it just didn’t cut it as a compelling game. Others disagree and that’s fine. A few of my friends are big Manhunt fans and have offered various counters to my dislikes of the game that I can appreciate and I see the appeal, but personally I cant sit through a disrupting cut-scene for every kill made in a game. I just cant do it, its bad enough to have your flow disrupted for a cut-scene but when its the same one you saw 2 minutes ago but with a slightly different background, its time to move on.

That said, I don’t believe in the ban Manhunt 2 received here in the UK. For a classification board to say Manhunt 2 may negatively effect adults and a few weeks later pass the movie, Eastern Promises, and make a statement indicating that they are not here to make cuts and if adults don’t want to see the violence they can just turn away from the screen, is unreal. This alone should show the problems the classification board has, mainly that it doesn’t count video games as a worthy medium. Had it considered gaming to be viable media they would have looked upon Manhunt 2 in the same light that it looked on Hostel, Saw, or the recent Eastern Promises and classified it in the same manner.

The conflicting statements made by the BBFC prove that either their guidelines for game classifications need reviewing or we need a new independent body to classify games. An independent body that knows and values games as a medium of entertainment, not necessarily art but definitely entertainment.

Hells Kitchen enters the world of gaming?

Hells KitchenReally? Hells Kitchen you say? Yeah, I don’t see it either but it seems to be happening…

The slow crawl of shit into the world of gaming does not surprise me, its been happening for years, but Hells Kitchen? How long will it be before some suit decides it would be a good idea to commission Big Brother: The Game? How would that even work? Achievements for avoiding racial conflict?
