Busy Month…and an Assassin Creed review

ac2 Hmm, I just realised its been almost a month since my last post here.. so what have I been up to?

Gaming as always. Somewhat more full on this last few months even by my standards. I picked up a couple of Xbox games cheap in a ‘two for one’ deal finally adding Assassins Creed and Halo 3 to my ever expanding library.

Halo 3 was one of those games I could have lived without.. I left it too long and then Call of Duty 4 released and any incentive to pick up Halo 3 vanished in the face of the sheer greatness of CoD4, but I had to get something and it was the best of the bunch by a long shot so there you go.

Assassins Creed was another title I’d almost decided to let go based on criticism I had heard regarding its repetitive missions before each assassination.

EA’s had enough…

masseffect  ..and quite rightly so. Everyone’s having a pop at Mass Effect lately which wouldn’t be so bad but for the fact that the majority of things the mainstream media are ‘reporting’ on is complete and utter BS.

Latest to take a swing at the game is FOX News, spewing more false claims and citing ‘experts’ that have never even played the game.

Circulating blogs today is a copy of a letter sent from EA to FOX asking for corrections to be made.. The part I find most interesting is EA’s implication that as games take more viewers away from the TV and ratings take a hit, mainstream media is more likely to attempt to paint gaming in a negative light in some vain attempt to pull ratings back..

As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This is very interesting to me as its a theory I have entertained for some time now.. The OC inclusion is genius. That show has more sexual content that Mass Effect and is widely available to people under 17. Pot/Kettle/Black

Really hope EA get somewhere with this…

Online Diary: Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare

cod4 I’ve been playing a lot of COD4 this week and it really is an outstanding game.

Offline, I’m about halfway through the campaign on Hardened. I had heard the campaign was a little short so decided to up the difficulty to give me a challenge and stretch the game out a little. I almost went with Veteran but online reports lead me to believe sections can get very frustrating and hard at Veteran level.. I’ll save that setting for my replay for Achievements.

Online, I’m having a blast.. really has that “just one more game” aspect to it, keeping me up till 2/3am trying to rank up again and unlock some of the goodies you can only get access to by climbing up the ranks.

The guns are well balanced in that, the starter assault rifle is just as effective as the assault rifle you unlock at level 55, giving new players and experienced ones somewhat of a level playing field in that respect. Maps have dynamic respawn points, moving you around the map as areas are overrun with enemy players.. really helps stop base rapers. All the guns have extra features such as new camo’s, silencers, increased range scopes.. all unlocked as you rank up through online play.

All the above come into play in the ‘create-a-class’ feature unlocked at level 4. This option allows you to pick a weapon, attachment (grenade launcher, silencer, scope), camo, and a selection of ‘perks’ to fill 3 available slots.

These perks are the meat of the custom class creation. Your character has 3 available slots for perks which are passive abilities that boost your combat in various different ways. For example, if you equip a grenade launcher to your gun, the first perk slot will be taken up with grenade ammo. You could instead choose to take an RPG, claymores, C4, or extra ’special’ grenades (flashbang/smoke/stun grenades).

Perks 2 and 3 are a little different. Perk 1 is usually ammo of some type as you can see, Perks 2 and 3 contain combat boosts such as, increased bullet damage and/or penetration (allowing certain guns to shoot through walls if thin enough), a sprint boost allowing you to run for longer, steady aim for when you have to fire from the hip, last stand allowing you to pull a pistol out in your dying breath and even the score with whoever took you out before you ‘bleed out’. I wont list them all but you get the general idea.. using combinations of these perks, weapons and attachments its possible to alter your playstyle greatly to suit your needs. For example, I have a silenced MP5, extra stun grenades, UAV Jammer, Extreme Conditioning as my primary loadout.

The thinking behind this is, with a silencer you do not show up on the map when you fire as you do with non-silenced weapons, the UAV Jammer stops the radar picking me up when the enemy team calls it in, Extreme Conditioning is the ’sprint for longer’ distances perk which allows me to quickly move around the map. The stun grenades are for immobilising the enemy quickly in a pinch.

Using this loadout I can get around the map fast, flushing out snipers and campers to great effect. UAV Jammer makes me invisible to all, giving me the drop on people who expect to see a red dot on the minimap when an enemy approaches The silenced gun means that when I do find some snipers holed up, its possible (as long as no-one see’s me enter the room) to sneak up on them, shoot the first guy without showing up on the minimap (which seems to fool people to think there buddy was sniped from somewhere else) then I’m free to either gun down whoever is left, drop a nade and back out firing, or my fave lately, take out the trusty knife and shank that sniper :)

When I started using this technique I managed to come up behind 4 people on Vacant and shank the lot of them, one after the other before someone realised and threw a grenade at my feet….

The other reason behind this loadout is the knife. Sometimes its more reliable to sprint up on an enemy and slice em’ up so the Extreme Conditioning perk really lets you get up close and personal fast.. most people still back away firing from the hip (reduced accuracy) when you surprise them so I’m all too happy to hit sprint and slam a knife into my opponent :) Fast and satisfying!

Distractions..

I don’t know how, and I’m not questioning it, but my Xbox rose from the dead last week just in time for two big games I had been anticipating. Halo 3 being one and Skate being the other.

It was a tough decision but after playing the demo I went with Skate and I don’t regret it for a second. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the Halo 3 beta when I played (I got my luckiest frag ever during the stress test) but I’ve been playing FPS games for the last 10 years or so. Halo, while a blast to play, doesn’t bring much to the genre. Skate on the other-hand is not only a blast to play, but it brings a lot to its genre.

I will get Halo 3, but for now… its all about skate.

Reached 50% complete last night after completing a few challenges and I’ve logged in over 20 hours already according to the stats page… though I’m unsure if that’s an indication of the amount of content to get through, or a testament to the games free-skate mode in which you can lose yourself for hours.

I don’t have much ready to write for this as I’ve been too busy playing so until then, I’ll make do with posting up this video showcasing a few of the spots I was skating last night.

Stranglehold

I also downloaded Stranglehold from MP to have a blast on.

More or less what I expected, Max Payne with a kick. There’s a lot of action, some cool gunfights.. you can tell John Woo is attached to this.

The graphics are not that outstanding, but they really don’t need to be. The action is frantic enough that your always looking for the next interactive object to shoot, table to slide across, or bad guy to plant a slug in.

The one complaint I have is some of the areas you fight in are crowded to say the least. I found some areas I could not move without starting the bullet time animation when sliding over tables. Yeah it looks cool, but I don’t want to do it every 5 steps in an area.

Saying that, when it works its a LOT of fun. Running up and down bannister’s shooting neon lights so they fall on bad guys for extra style points has something to it. I did find myself more and more trying to utilise the scenery in my gunfights as it looks cooler and scores higher. I can see me getting quite obsessive over this on release :)

BioShock

I downloaded the Bioshock demo from marketplace yesterday. My XBox may not read disks but it still works for downloaded demos thankfully.

Had to have a go on it before I sent the box back for repair and man am I glad I did. I already had my eye on this title but didn’t know too much about it, the 15 min demo told me everything I need to know. That I have to buy it!

Absolutely oozing with atmosphere, amazing opening sequence, refreshing level design with an art deco feel to it all, slick graphics, and a smooth control system to boot. Really impressed with the little I played of this demo, cant wait to get my teeth into the full game. I’ll try and get a video up in the next few days of the demo from start to finish.

Its a shame my box will probably still be away for repair for the release of this game, same for Skate too which just eats me up inside.

Must ring XBox customer support again today and sort it out! I cannot go without playing these games for nigh on a month!

Lucky Rocket Kill

Thankfully the Halo 3 Beta lets you save the last match played as a sort of video file to HD or I’d have lost this lucky frag forever.
